OLD RELIABLE FOODS

A new community service-actually a community store-has been started on Cleveland's east side: the first non-profit cooperatively run food store in this city. It has been christened Food Communities, and resides at 12408 Euclid Avenue, just east of Lakeview Cemetery.

Food Communities has a history nearly five years old as a cooperative buying club operating out of a church. The decision to go into a store was based on a small savings account, a desire among many of the members to increase substantially the inventory they offered, and an interest in seeing a cooperative movement begin (and hopefully expand) in this city as it has elsewhere.

As a cooperative, the store is owned and work is done by those who've paid membership. This keeps operating expenses at a min. imum and allows prices to members to be 10% over wholesale cost.

Three days a week the co-op opens to serve any interested customers, as well as its members. The hours are:

Tuesday Thursday

1 to 8 pm

1 to 8 pm

Saturday

11 to 3 pm

These hours were specifically set to help the working person use and help operate the co-op.

Although the emphasis is primarily on food for less money, a concern for good, nutritionally sound food can be seen in the choice of baked goods and lack of "quick" or processed goods. The bread, rolls, muffins and sweets resemble the typical health food store items, using only whole wheat flour, honey, spring water, etc., but the prices are nowhere near as expensive as a health food store. More than a fresh, home baked, high quality food, these bakery products are a source of support for the bakers, women from a rehabilitation program for drug-dependent persons.

As membership increases, making more people available to work in the store, the co-op will expand days and hours. There is a one-time membership fee of $5, and each adult member contributes a half hour a week (it can be "batched" into every other week, once a month, or each week, depending on the member's schedule and preferences). There are no requirements for membership any interested person may join. Non-members, or non-working members must pay more 20% surcharge over member's prices. Since most groceries mark up 40% to 50% on all but their "loss leaders", this is still a good saving on most items.

Food Communities carries a full line of fresh (bought that morning from the wholesale market) vegetables and fruits, eight to ten varieties of cheese (about half of which comes from Amish farmers), dried fruits, nuts, honey, teas and spices, and an ever-expanding list of dry goods: grains, beans, flours. For convenience, a basic line of paper goods, soaps and cleaning products are carried.

Food Communities is interested in sharing its skills and information with any community group that wants to start a co-op in their own neighborhood. The neighborhood co-ops could then together order larger quantities, thus passing even more savings on to the customer. Visitors and inquiries are welcome: call 721-3047, or stop by:

Because the co-op buys most goods in bulk, the customer packages her/his own food to take home. There are no "surprise packages" with bruised or green items at the bottom of the box. You also don't get home and discover that that old familiar box now only holds 12 or 14 ounces, not 16!

There are no frozen dinners, box dinners or canned goods. Some canned goods will prob ably be carried, because the co-op is committed to answering its members' requests. It will not be possible to offer much of a saving, however, as canned goods are generally priced closer to wholesale cost than other grocery items.
